What Happens After You Say Yes to the Dress?

The moment you say "yes" to your wedding dress is unforgettable.

You've found the gown, celebrated with your loved ones, taken photos, and checked one of the biggest items off your wedding planning list.

But what happens next?

Many brides are surprised to learn that finding the dress is only the beginning of the journey. From alterations and final fittings to wedding-day preparation and gown preservation, there are several important steps between saying "yes" and walking down the aisle.

Here's what you can expect after finding your dream dress.

Step 1: Ordering Your Gown

If you've chosen a special-order gown, your dress will be ordered directly from the designer in your selected size.

Most wedding gowns are made to order, which means they aren't pulled from a warehouse shelf. Production timelines vary by designer, but many gowns can take several months to arrive.

This is one of the reasons we recommend beginning your dress search approximately 10–12 months before your wedding date.

Once your gown arrives, we'll inspect your stunning gown and contact you with the exciting news and discuss the next steps.

Step 2: Alterations

One of the biggest misconceptions in bridal is that wedding dresses fit perfectly right off the rack.

In reality, almost every bride needs some level of alteration to achieve the best fit possible.

Common alterations may include:

  • Hemming the length

  • Adjusting straps

  • Taking in or letting out the bodice

  • Adding support or cups

  • Creating a bustle

  • Customizing sleeves or details

At Main Street Bridal, we're fortunate to have an experienced in-house seamstress who has been helping brides look and feel their best for years.

Because alterations are such an important part of the bridal process, we recommend allowing approximately 2–3 months before your wedding for fittings and adjustments.

Step 3: Creating Your Bustle

If your gown has a train, you'll likely need a bustle.

A bustle is a series of buttons, hooks, or ties that allow your train to be lifted after the ceremony.

Why is this important?

Because while a dramatic train is beautiful for photos and walking down the aisle, it can quickly become difficult to manage during your reception.

Your bustle allows you to move comfortably, dance, mingle with guests, and enjoy your celebration without worrying about stepping on your gown.

During your final fitting, we'll show you exactly how your bustle works and recommend assigning a trusted family member or bridesmaid to learn how to secure it on your wedding day.

Step 4: Final Fitting and Wedding-Day Prep

As your wedding day approaches, you'll attend your final fitting to make sure everything fits exactly as it should.

This is typically when you'll try on your gown with:

  • Your wedding shoes

  • Veil

  • Jewelry

  • Other accessories

We'll make sure you're comfortable, confident, and ready for the big day.

A few additional wedding-day tips:

  • Hang your gown in a safe location before the ceremony.

  • Allow time for steaming if needed.

  • Have someone assigned to help with your bustle.

Small preparations can make a big difference in helping your day run smoothly.

Step 5: Enjoy Your Wedding Day

After months of planning, fittings, and anticipation, it's finally time.

Take a deep breath, soak in the moment, and enjoy every second.

Your wedding day will go by faster than you expect, so don't forget to pause, look around, and appreciate the memories you're creating. Appreciate the intimate one on one moments you have with your husband!

Step 6: Preserve Your Memories

After the wedding, many brides aren't sure what to do with their gown.

Even if your dress looks clean, it may contain invisible stains from makeup, body oils, champagne, grass, dirt, or sweat that can discolor fabric over time.

Professional cleaning and preservation help protect your gown for years to come.

Whether you hope to pass your dress down to a future generation or simply want to preserve an important piece of your story, preservation is one of the best ways to safeguard those memories.

At Main Street Bridal, we offer gown cleaning and preservation services to help brides protect their gowns long after the wedding day has passed.
